Space Ghost
What's the best thing you've read this week? Any new series I should be on the lookout for? Two questions I get almost daily. Well today, I can give one answer for both of them.
Did you ever wonder how we got Space Ghost, a super power spec ops space vigilante from Planet Ghost rolling around the universe with two seemingly random teens and their pet monkey? Well the new Space Ghost #1 finally sheds some light on that subject. Giving us a new character depth to an old beloved franchise that was never able to benefit from a now common treatment such as character development.
Now, usually I'm not a big fan of nostalgic relaunches as they reek of lazy cash grabs, but with the Energon Universe knocking it out of the park I decided to set aside my prejudice and give Space Ghost #1 from last week a chance to dazzle me. And friends, it did not disappoint.
Right out of the gate it's emotionally charged and connects with the average reader in a way that most books would struggle to replicate while staying as action packed as it as. No preface or setup to ease you in, it just goes hard from the word go like its still filling that 15 minute time slot on any given Saturday morning throughout many of our childhoods and plays out in about as much time. And if you find yourself thinking that your too young for that reference to apply to you then you are connected to the I.P. in perhaps a different way. Space Ghost Coast to Coast, the talk show host spoof that kept Space Ghost alive through the 90's and 00's as well as its subsequent spinoff Cartoon Planet, was a big influence on what would become the Gen Z and Gen Alpha humor mind set that has shaped a lot of that culture. So it turns out that whether you know it or not, we are all children of the Ghost.
